Etymology

Soon after the reunion movement in 1930 by Archbishop Geevarghese Mar Ivanios , about five families from mylapra reached thirumoolapuram and behold the Catholic Faith in the presence of Mar Theophilos[1]. They established a small chapel named St.George Malankara Catholic Church in Mylapra on June 9, 1932 with Rev.Fr. M.T Philipos (Kumbazha Achan) as the first Vicar. The history of the church took a diversion on January 19, 1936 when Rev.Fr. A G Abraham Thengumtharamedayil (Mylapra Achan) with a large group of followers(almost 100 families) embraced the Catholic Church. When the community grew up, it was essential to build a large church. So the construction began with the blessings of Archbishop Geevarghese Mar Ivanios. It was the diligent works of Rev.Fr. A G Abraham Thengumtharamedayil (Mylapra Achan) & Mr. K.I Thomas Kalayil which made the ambiguous task possible. Thus one of the largest Church at that time was constructed on September 15, 1944. But the name changed to Sacred Heart Catholic Church, due to the request made by a German Family who was the main sponsors. Rev.Fr. A G Abraham Thengumtharamedayil (Mylapra Achan) was the first vicar of this church. Later the present church was reconstructed under the leadership of Rev.Fr.John G Vadakepuram & Mr. M T Thomas Mannil and elevated in the status of a Forane Church. This is a major eclectic powerhouse in the Eparchy of Pathanamthitta[2][3].
